How to fix the Fortnite error message: "Out of Video Memory"

If you've been trying to load up Fortnite to play on the OG map, and you've had the error message "Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource. Make sure your video card has the minimum required memory, try lowering the resolution and/or closing other applications that are running. Exiting...", you're probably not the only one. Below we'll give you some potential fixes so you can get back to dropping at Tilted Towers as soon as possible.

 1. Verify the game files

This is probably the easiest fix that you could hope for with an issue like this. It's possible that one of your game files got corrupted in the download, or an essential file needs downloading. To start this process all you need to do is:

1.) Open Epic Games Launcher, and go to "Library"

2.) Find Fortnite in your Library and click on the three small dots under the game image.

3.) Click on "Manage"

4.) Click on "Verify" where it says Verify Files

Fortnite should begin to do a check of the file verification, and once it finishes reinstalling, try running your game again. This should hopefully help fix the issue.

2. Switch from DirectX12 to DirectX 11

If verifying the game files didn't work, then making a change from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11 may do the trick. This is likely a bug on Epic Games side, and hopefully will be fixed soon. However, until that time comes, here is how to make the change directly.

1.) Open Epic Games Launcher, and go to "Library"

2.) Find Fortnite in your Library and click on the three small dots under the game image.

3.) Click on "Manage"

4.) Under Launch Options, switch it to the "on" position, and in the dialogue box that opens type in "-dx11"(without the quotations).

3. Reinstall Fortnite

Sometimes there isn't much to do besides just uninstalling and reinstalling the game. If you have the time and no other solutions are working, it may just be worth a shot. To do this, you need to:

1.) Open Epic Games Launcher, and go to "Library"

2.) Find Fortnite in your Library and click on the three small dots under the game image.

3.) Click on "Uninstall", and then click "Uninstall" again on the box that pops up.

4.) Once uninstalled, you'll want to reinstall Fortnite right after. Just go back to "Library" and click on "Install" under Fortnite.

Hopefully one of these options helped you to get your game running in the right way. If an alternative solution helped you to fix this that we did not list above, let us know on our Discord so we can update this article.
